Unlocking the church in Resident Evil 4 is a pivotal milestone in Leon S. Kennedy's mission to rescue Ashley Graham. However, gaining entry is not as simple as finding a standard key, as the church door requires a unique emblem known as the Church Insignia. To obtain this key, players must navigate Chapter 4, explore the lake area by boat, and complete two distinct shrine puzzles.
Where to Find the Church Key Altar
The Church Insignia is housed inside the Mural Cave, which is located on the southern side of the lake. Upon arriving at the central altar within the shrine, players will notice that the key is locked firmly in place by a mechanical mechanism. To release the key, you must retrieve two stone heads and place them on the pedestals flanking the altar.
Solving the Shrine Puzzles for Key Items
The first item, the Apostate's Head, is located at the Large Cave Shrine to the south. Players must examine the yellow symbols painted on the cave walls and press the corresponding buttons on the shrine's pedestal to unlock the door. Solving this puzzle grants access to the statue holding the stone head.
The second item, the Blasphemer's Head, can be found at the Small Cave Shrine situated in the northern portion of the lake map. Similar to the first location, players need to align perspective-based yellow markings across the environment to input the correct button sequence. Once both heads are safely in your inventory, return to the Mural Cave.
Claiming the Insignia and Unlocking the Church
Place the Apostate's Head and Blasphemer's Head onto the hands at the central altar to release the Church Insignia. With the key in hand, steer your boat back toward the shore and make your way through the Quarry toward the village churchyard. Inserting the insignia into the front gate unlocks the doors, allowing you to proceed inside to continue the story.
